Ford Territory 4,0 AWD Ghia

Broadcast date : 17th September 2006

The Ford Territory comes in three models, and the all-wheel-drive Ghia is the top version. It has sonar park-sensing for the front and a rear-pointing television camera for reversing.

All the Territory models are seven-seaters, and the middle rear seat adjusts to provide extra legroom when the rear seats are in use.

The driver’s seat has electric memory adjustment, and the audio on the Ghia model includes a six-speaker, six-disc CD system with an amp.

The overall effect is pleasant without being particularly classy in terms of plastic quality and fit.

On-road, we have to say, is where the Territory is happiest, mainly because it doesn’t have enough ground clearance for sudden variances in gradient.

There’s also no low-range transmission fitted, so your approach to obstacles is not as controlled as it would be in a pucker off-roader. This is not a criticism of the Territory as such, merely a pointer for owners who may get in over their heads in terms of the car’s bush-whacking abilities.

In this regard, the all-wheel-drive configuration doesn’t make too much sense, apart from the stability it provides on wet tar roads and smooth gravel.

Yes, it’s stadig oor die klippe for the Territory, although on-road it’s a great performer, and that new six-speed automatic ‘box makes the car feel so much more contemporary.

The new gearbox actually makes the all-wheel-drive Ghia model marginally quicker in the 0-100 sprint than the rear-wheel-drive Territories, which still use the four-speed auto ‘box. The Ghia comes in at 9,5 seconds for the benchmark sprint.

Top speed on all models is governed to 180 km/h. With the fine Australian-developed chassis it would be safe at speeds of up to 200 km/h, although this is irrelevant given our 120 km/h national speed limit.
