What’s not to like? That was a
well-known motoring scribe’s response to the new Audi RS4
and we’d go along with that.
It just looks so… well, so right! Details abound to denote
its special status and yet it still has the trademark Audi
subtlety that we know and love.
Yes, there’s the de rigeur deeper spoiler, larger air
intakes, flaired wheel arches, Xenon RS4-specific
light-clusters and fat tailpipes. But it’s all done with so
much good taste.
309 kilowatts of fire, to be precise. That outguns the 270
kilowatts of the Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG, and eclipses the BMW
M3’s 252 offering. Right on, Ingolstadt!
If you push this car ridiculously hard it will understeer,
but normal folks will never experience that, even if you
happen to own one. If you’re Clint, you can get it
to oversteer, but it takes some doing.
And very hard on the tyres in the hands of Wildman Weston.
Clint is setting the car up for oversteer, or tail-sliding, by
dipping the clutch and simultaneously hooking the hand brake
to lock up the rear wheels. But see how easily he gathers it
all up. Driven conventionally, it’s rock solid on Wesbank
Raceway.
The RS4 is THE most exciting Audi to come along in decades. In
fact Car Magazine says it’s the best car Audi has ever made,
and their performance figures back that up.
0-100 in 4,6 seconds, a standing kilometre sprint in 23,2, and
a terminal or exiting speed at the end of the standing
kilometre of 230 km/h.
Car achieved a true top-speed of 266 with this car, despite
being supposedly limited to the German "agreement"
of a 250 km/h speed for non supercars.
Yet the RS4 is so much more than just raw pace. It’s cabin
is elegance personified with suitable sporting overtones.
And the instrument panel even includes a lap timer for weekend
racers.
The seats have extra bolstering, and these can be tightened or
loosened at the push of a button. They automatically tighten
to your settings once you hit the sports button.
Yes, welcome back Audi, to that place where supercars live,
even if this one happens to have four doors.
