Hyundai Getz 2006

Broadcast date : 9th April 2006

The Hyundai Getz comes with two different engines and two spec levels. This is the base spec 1,4 litre model, and uses a new four-cylinder petrol engine producing an impressive 70 kiloWatts.

You can also order a 78 kiloWatt 1,6 litre version. The High-Spec version of the 1,4 adds an extra airbag and an audio system as standard. The 1,6 litre version is also available with an automatic transmission.

Another feature the base model does without is ABS braking which is an important safety omission in todayís increasingly sophisticated and over-populated motoring environment.

Hyundai has learnt its lessons well from successful European manufacturers. If you have a successful formula, donít mess with it, an example in this context being the Volkswagen Golf.

The facelift is quite extensive, and yet the new features donít substantially alter the essential look of the Getz.

Nevertheless, a new bonnet, grille, bumper, headlight and tail-light treatment give the car a fresher look, while side protective mouldings are also new, as well as a wasteline crease.

Like the exterior, the interior is smart and well-screwed together without being avant garde.

It reminds one of the successfully inoffensive philosophy employed for decades by Toyota to its Corolla range.

Our base model test car was fitted with an extra-cost optional radio-CD player, but nevertheless equipment levels are high.

Instrumentation is smart, electric window controls are handily placed on the door armrests and plastic quality is solid.

And the upgrade from 1,3 litres to 1,4 makes the Getz even more usable in everyday motoring.

The increase in torque from a 117 to 125 Newton metres is a boost in both urban and country environs. And Hyundai has taken pains to make this car user-friendly in other mechanical areas.

The Getz has just got better, and squeaking in at under R100 000, itís good value. But for the younger set, itís perhaps just a little too conservative, a little bit on the "grey-shoes" side of the style spectrum.
